今回は「もったいない」ということばを説明します。
「もったいない」は使えるものが捨てられたり、働けるものがその力を使わないでいたりして、無駄になっていると感じるという意味です。「どうして使わないの？使えばいいのに。」という気持ちです。
Wasteful.
例えば、ピザを1枚の半分食べました。お腹がいっぱいで、もう食べられません。残りを捨てますか。
だめ～。
もったいないです。冷蔵庫に入れておけば、明日食べられます。もったいないから、取っておきましょう。
そうしよう。
友達と映画に行く約束をしました。12時に駅で会います。私は時間どおりに行きました。でも友達は12時30分になっても、来ません。電話をしても、出ません。時間がもったいないので、帰ります。
弟は日本語の他に、英語、中国語、フランス語、ドイツ語を話すことができます。
すご～い。
弟は今仕事を見つけようとしていますが、全然言語を使わない仕事を探しています。もったいないです。弟に言います。「もったいなくない？！言語を使う仕事にしたら？」このようなときにも「もったいない」を使います。
例文です。
ライブのチケットを買ったのに、風邪で行けなかった。もったいない。
水を流し続けるのはもったいないから、やめてください。
天気がいいのに、家の中にいるのはもったいない。

では、日本語を勉強しているサムライキャット、ジョバの会話を見てみましょう。ジョバは日本に留学しています。今日は日本語学校が終わったあと、夜コンビニへバイトに行きます。バイト先での会話です。ジョバの日本語は中級レベルです。

消費期限って何ですか。
What is “Shouhi kigen”?
消費期限は書いてあるときまで安全に食べられる日や時間という意味。これは10時まで。もうすぐ10時になるから、もう売れないんだ。
