今回は日本のバレンタインデーの風習についてお話しします。
I would like to talk about the custom of Valentine’s Day in Japan.
本命チョコ｜Hommei chocolates
本命チョコとは、付き合っている人や配偶者、片思いの相手など好きな人に贈るチョコレートです。本命とは第一候補という意味です。
“Hommei chocolates” are given to someone you like, such as a person you are dating, your spouse, or a person you have a crush on. “Hommei” means first choice.
義理チョコ｜Giri chocolates
義理チョコとは世間的なつきあいの上で、仕方なくするあげるチョコレートです。
“Giri-chocolates” are given out of necessity as part of a social relationship.
ですから義理チョコの代表格は会社の同僚や上司にあげるチョコのことです。ところがこの頃は仕方なくあげたりもらったりする、義理チョコはお互い負担を感じるということで、やり取りは減ってきていると言われています。
Therefore, the representative example of “Giri-chocolate” is the chocolate given to colleagues and bosses at work. However, it is said that these days the exchange of “Giri chocolates” is decreasing because both feel it is a burden.
世話チョコ｜Sewa chocolates
世話チョコとは、お世話になった人にお礼の意味を込めて贈るチョコレートのことです。
“Sewa chocolates” are given to those who have taken care of you as a token of appreciation.
義理チョコのように仕方なくあげるのではなく、世話チョコは自ら日頃のお礼をするためにあげるチョコです。
Rather than being given out of obligation, like “Giri chocolates”, “Sewa chocolates” are chocolates that are given to thank the recipient for his or her daily support.
友チョコ｜Tomo chocolates
友チョコとは主に女性間で贈り合うチョコレートのことです。最近では本命チョコよりも、友達同士で贈り合って楽しむ友チョコの方が増えているともいわれています。
“Tomo chocolates” are mainly given to women. Recently, it is said that the number of “Tomo chocolates”, in which friends enjoy giving each other chocolates, is increasing rather than “Honmei chocolates”.
自分チョコ｜Jibun chocolates
最後は自分チョコ。いつも頑張っている自分にあげるチョコです。普段買わないような高いチョコを買って、自分を労わります。
The last one is ”Jibun chocolates”. This is the chocolate that you give to yourself for always working hard. We buy expensive chocolates that I would not normally buy and take care of ourselves.
バレンタインはチョコを贈るイベントから、自分のために買ったり、友達と交換したり自分が楽しむイベントへ変化しているともいえます。
It can be said that Valentine’s Day is changing from an event for giving chocolates to an event for enjoying oneself, buying chocolates for oneself or exchanging them with friends.
ホワイトデー｜White Day
ホワイトデーとは日本で生まれた習慣と言われ、一バレンタインデーにもらったお返しに一般的に男性が女性にお菓子を贈る日です。
White Day is said to be a custom that originated in Japan, and is a day when men generally give sweets to women in return for gifts received on Valentine’s Day.
